India's
road transportation experienced two significant events this week. First, the PM
e-Drive program to encourage the use of electric vehicles (EVs) has been
approved by the Indian government. World EV Day was the second event.
For example, road transport accounts for over 90% of transport emissions in India, and about 70% of freight is transported by road.
Even though these medium- and heavy-duty freight trucks only make up 2% of vehicles that drive on roads, they are responsible for over 45% of all road emissions.
Therefore, India's climate goals depend heavily on the electrification of transportation.
Over 128 businesses were a part of EV100 in 2023. 28 of them were involved in operations in India.
E-trucks can make business sense.

Although e-trucks' initial costs are
currently higher than those of vehicles powered by fossil fuels, their
operating costs are significantly lower due to lower fuel and maintenance
costs. They can improve logistics efficiency through specialized features like
optimized routing and regenerative braking. As a result, deliveries may be made
more quickly and effectively. According to an estimate, electric trucks also
offer fuel savings of approximately 50% when compared to diesel trucks.
Zomato and Flipkart topped the list of the top 10 global companies that have
committed the most to EV100's corporate electric fleet in the most recent EV100
Annual Disclosure Report.
